Traditional Crafts in Mie Prefecture

Trational Crafts and Materials

Traditional craft articles have been fostered in the daily life of the people of that district since quite a long time ago, supported by the regional climate and history.
To our regret, however, recent highly advanced economy affected adversely and led these traditional arts to decline. To preserve our traditional arts, the "Law for promoting traditional craft articles" was enacted in Sept., 1974.
Supported by this law, the traditional craft articles of our town are now being restored.
For this purpose, Mie Prefecture picked up four major items to be the traditional craft articles.
They are "Iga Kumihimo (braid)","Yokkaichi Banko-Yaki(ceramics)","Suzuka Sumi(dark Japanese-style liquid ink)" and "Iga-Yaki(ceramics)","Ise Katagami" (pattern paper)was designated as the traditional art material. The craftsmen are now trying to develope their own arts for the promising future of their own region.
